Listen to a conversation between a student and a professor
Student:
Hi, professor Johnson. So You've heard the good news about the literary magazine,.
Professor
I sure have. congratulations. Didn't you and a few other students try to get something similar off the ground last year, but then you ran into some problems.
Student:
We totally blew it last year. We did a rush job on the proposal. We left out some important parts and the rest of the proposal was really vague. Some people blame the Dean for not
giving us more of a chance, but really the bottom line was that we didn't leave ourselves
enough time to do it well. But this time we learned our lesson and we were way ahead of the game and Dean burger proved our proposal.
Professor
I'm glad. I look forward to reading … What are you calling I。
Student
In the proposal we call the chapter and verse, you know, because we plan to publish both poetry and pros.
Professor
Chapter and verse. Very clever! I like it.
Student:
Me too. Some people wanted to call it the buildings review just name it after the college。
Professor
Kind of boring if you ask me, especially with a new publication you wanna name that's
gonna grab people's attention. I mean you know that new bookstore in town I can't believe
they called it Wall bookstore
Student
Yeah, exactly.
Professor:
So the magazine will be exclusively devoted to student work?
Student
Yep, poetry, some fictional stories and some nonfiction essays.
professor
Sounds great. I like that diversity of content.
Student
I'm really glad you say that because I actually came here to find out if you're interested in being our faculty advisor.
Professor
you'd like me to be involved. Thanks. Actually, it's something I've done in the past, been the faculty advisor to a student publication. So I have some idea of the kind of time
commitment required.
Student
but we wouldn't expect you to be on all the needy gritty details, you know like reading submissions or attending every editorial meeting.
Professor
But I would want to. See, that's the problem. It may seem silly, but I really don't want to
be one of those people who's happy to just put their name on something. Your group deserve someone who is ready to give 100%.
Student
Ok, but what I mean is we won't make any special demands on your time and we’ll be very grateful for any time you decide to give us.
Professor
I understand. The problem is me. What I'd expect of myself. Basically what's happening is that I'm working on a book and it's a particularly hectic time. But you know what, I really respect your persistence. You were turned down last year, but you didn't let that stop you from trying again. Can you give me a week to think it through?
Student:
Sure.
Professor:
I'll let you know.
